ACE Studio Creator Spotlight: From Vintage Reel-to-Reel to Limitless AI Vocals

A Musical Life, Rekindled by Technology
Steve Calvert’s musical journey began in the analog era of reel-to-reel recorders and magnetic tape. At 16, he picked up the bass guitar and joined local bands. By 21, recording gear pulled him deeper into music:
“I started writing music around the age of 16. I learnt to play the bass guitar and played in a few local bands. At 21, I bought a Tascam 244, which led me into the world of recording, which I loved.”
By the time he was 25, Steve had opened his own commercial 8-track studio, later upgrading it to 16 tracks. It was the 1980s, big desks, magnetic tape, and the early days of MIDI. He thrived in the studio world, but as home recording tech evolved, demand for commercial spaces like his began to fade.
He closed the studio in the late ’80s. The recording landscape was shifting, and small commercial studios were no longer sustainable. At the same time, Steve’s life was entering a new chapter, one filled with responsibilities that didn’t leave much room for late-night sessions or chasing the perfect take. Marriage, children, and a mortgage reshaped his priorities.
However, music didn’t disappear; it only grew quiet for a while. Until computers brought it back:
“10 years later, things had moved on in the recording world, and music started to be recorded on computers. I therefore bought a computer and started recording again.”
That spark also led to a creative partnership that still lasts today:
“I met a friend and we started writing songs, which we are still doing today after 30 years.”
Finding ACE Studio on the Road
Splitting his time between the UK and Thailand, Steve often found himself writing, but without a vocalist nearby, many of his songs remained unfinished. ACE Studio has changed that.
“I came across ACE Studio whilst watching YouTube. As I live part of my life in Thailand and travel a lot, I don’t always have access to a vocalist. I thought I would try it and was blown away by the quality of the voices.”
From that moment, he had instant access to realistic, expressive vocals wherever he was.
“I could write and instantly have a voice I could use to record with. The quality of the voice is far superior to many of the voices out there.”
The impact was immediate; even his friends couldn’t tell it was AI.
“When I played my 1st track with an AI voice nobody knew, they wanted to know who had sung it.”
Songs Brought to Life with AI Vocals
Steve has used ACE Studio on several projects, sometimes as the lead vocal engine, other times to enhance existing recordings with added harmonies and warmth.
One of his standout tracks is the ballad “Heaven,” composed entirely with ACE vocals. Steve recalls the creative process:
“I had no idea how I wanted them to sound, so I just experimented until I had a tune, then wrote the lyrics around it.”
Another example is “Castles in the Air,” a song originally recorded with live vocals. With ACE Studio, Steve added harmonies and refined the overall vocal mix.
“I use ACE on another song that was written and already recorded, and added harmonies to it; that song is ‘Castles in the Air’.”
Both “Heaven” and “Castles in the Air” share a soft, balladic tone, elevated by ACE’s clarity and warmth.
“Both nice ballads, the AI tunes the vocals perfectly and gives the voice a warm feel.”
Steve continues to use ACE Studio across different stages of production, from sketching new ideas to polishing final mixes. For him, it’s not a shortcut, but a creative ally that supports the full arc of songwriting and vocal production.
A Smarter Workflow for Independent Creators
ACE Studio has become Steve’s go-to solution for vocal creation, editing, and enhancement, all from his laptop, even while traveling.
“Workflow is better as I can work creating a voice from anywhere, even the beach in Thailand.”
This ability to capture ideas in the moment, without coordinating with vocalists or booking studio time, has given him a new level of creative independence. This flexibility has transformed the way he approaches music production.
Steve often blends human and AI performances, using ACE vocals to add clarity, depth, or fix imperfections in recordings.
“Makes life easier than using real vocalists. I often use a vocalist, then put an AI voice on top with ACE.”
The software also supports him in post-production, helping clean up vocals that don’t quite land.
It took patience to master the tool, but the payoff was worth it:
“Takes time learning and perfecting, but when you get there, the results are well worth it.”
Today, ACE Studio allows Steve to stay in the flow of creativity, no matter where he is or what stage the song is in. It’s no longer just a convenience; it has become an essential part of his process.
When Passion Gets Noticed — and Grows
When Steve shared his AI-powered tracks with other musicians, they were impressed, not just by the music, but by the “singer.”
“They liked it very much and were very impressed with the singer.”
Although he often collaborates with another musician, Steve usually prefers to handle the vocal work on his own because it demands focus and precision.
“I just work with other musicians, but usually work on my own doing the vocals as it takes a lot of concentration.”
Today, he’s actively pushing his songs to publishers and exploring new directions. While he hasn’t yet tried ACE’s custom voice modeling, it’s something he’s eager to explore.
“Not yet, but I will definitely look at it in the future.”
Looking Forward: Still Writing After All These Years
Steve’s journey proves that tools change, but passion doesn’t. From tape machines and outboard gear to neural networks and vocal models, the desire to create has always led the way.
“ACE Studio has helped my writing. It’s opened doors that didn’t exist before, and brought music back into my life.”
